One of my three works paying homage to King's Quest, a video game from my childhood. Some of the characters and creatures in that universe were sometimes inspired by fairy tales. In this context, this witch was the one from Hansel and Gretel. She was the first video game villain I ever encountered—and she made quite an impression, despite the chunky pixels of the era! The classic dark witch with the big hat… and probably questionable hygiene. This painting doesn’t necessarily depict a specific scene from the game, but rather the stress this character caused me. That moment in our childhood nightmares that fills us with a sense of helplessness and fear, even though we know full well that no matter how fast we run, no matter where we hide, the monster will find us. And he doesn’t even have to hurry, the bastard!
