This work depicts the suffering that everyone may carry within themselves and the way in which a person can find comfort in harming those who have hurt them. The figure’s isolation and predatory smile embody this transformation of suffering into a form of satisfaction, while the absence of visible wounds allows this pain to shine through solely in her demeanor. Between a person who silently bears what they have endured and the solace they seem to find in the suffering they in turn inflict, the work reveals the tension between the desire to return what was received and the unease of deriving pleasure from it.
