This work depicts family turmoil and how one person’s suffering can gradually affect those around them. The intertwined figures, the weathered faces, and the lines that run through the father and mother embody this tension, while the children, gathered in the center of the composition, remain, for now, untouched by what is unfolding around them. By juxtaposing a family gathered in a single image with suffering that does not affect everyone in the same way, the work reveals the tension of a sense of unease that spreads, while momentarily leaving certain members on the sidelines.
