Recognition (after)

This work depicts the artist’s belated recognition and the contrast between the value accorded to a living artist’s work and that attributed to it after the artist’s death, through an expressive reinterpretation of an iconic self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh. The figure of the artist, torn between a living, decaying body and an elegant skeleton, along with the swirling blues of the background, graphically embody ignored suffering, the posthumous transformation of identity, and the glorification of a creator only after his death. By contrasting the fragility of the body that creates with the perfection attributed to the body that is no longer there, the work captures the paradox of recognition that comes too late, when the artist is no longer present to receive it.
