In the Family

This work depicts the impact of suicide on the family unit and the disconnect between outward appearances and inner suffering, through a composition in which a smiling central figure stands alongside the distorted bodies of those left behind to grapple with the loss. The smiling face, marked by a skeletal presence; the figures distorted by sadness; the yellow flames; and the black drips graphically embody the duality between the illusion of relief, the destruction of the family, and the burden of grief passed on to the survivors. By contrasting the frozen expression of the departed figure with the visible pain of those left behind, the work captures how a single act can leave a lasting mark on an entire family.
