Artwork Description

I just finished "Scottsdale Afterglow." I wanted to present the desert at the moment sunset cools into night — red mountains, tall saguaros, and a lone rider moving through the scene in muted tones. The contrast between lingering warmth and a star-dusted sky conveys a quiet, roaming mood. Which element draws you in most — the color, the rider, or the sky? Tell me below, and if you’d like to see this in another size or on canvas, I can share options. This piece would make a striking Southwestern accent in your space. I work in primarily watercolor and gouache layered — building images through repeated layering and drawing. My work examines the American Southwest as both measured terrain and cultural image: saguaros, red mesas, riders and horses recur as formal anchors and as symbols of movement, memory, and myth. I am drawn to that moment between day and night when color shifts and scale compresses; the desert’s saturated reds and cooling twilight blues become a stage where solitude and presence are equally visible. Visual sources range from mid‑century illustration and folk signage to photographic stills of Western film, but the goal is not nostalgia. I want these motifs to function as contemporary language — to present the landscape as a site where human narrative and geological time meet. I assemble each piece through broad washes that establish tonal fields, then articulate figures and cacti with ink and pastel to emphasize silhouette and texture. Limiting the palette heightens the tension between heat and cool, while proportion and negative space set the emotional distance between viewer and subject. Repeating and varying the same elements across works lets me explore how small shifts in color, line, or scale change mood and meaning. Across the body of work I aim to present landscapes that are at once familiar and unsettled — depictions that reveal how place holds stories, and how a single figure or plant can register belonging, isolation, and persistence. "Scottsdale Afterglow Rider" presents a desert tableau: towering saguaros rise against rugged red mountains beneath a dusk sky dusted with stars. A lone rider in muted tones moves through the landscape, introducing a quiet sense of solitude and motion. Warm reds offset cool twilight blues across layered textures and expressive brushwork, conveying the shift from sunset into night. A striking, contemplative piece that would make a fine addition to a living room, study, or office.
