The beauty you see is the beauty within you...
Yasmine Ben is a Montreal-based contemporary artist whose work explores the connections between memory, identity, and materiality. Through a multidisciplinary approach that combines painting, sculpture, collage, and mixed media, she creates visual narratives rooted in her personal experience as well as in philosophical reflections and quotations. Her artistic process is guided by intuition and emotional resonance, often incorporating natural textures, subtle gestures, and symbolic elements. Each work becomes a meditation on time, transformation, and the fragile beauty of human connections. Her mixed-media practice unfolds through a process of accumulation, transformation, and refinement. Each work develops through successive layers of acrylic paint, drawing, collage, and textured materials, allowing the surface to evolve gradually over time. Rather than following a predetermined image, she constructs each composition through an intuitive dialogue between gesture and structure. Traces are added, concealed, erased, and then rediscovered, creating a visual narrative that remains embedded in the finished work. Each layer contributes to the work’s depth, revealing evidence of earlier decisions and inviting careful observation. The interplay between contrasting materials—opaque and transparent, smooth and textured, controlled and spontaneous—creates dynamic surfaces where memory and presence coexist. This layered approach reflects her interest in resilience, impermanence, and the subtle traces of lived experience. For her, mixed media is not simply the combination of different materials; it is a method of exploration. Each material brings its own physical and symbolic qualities, contributing to a rich visual language that invites viewers to look beyond the surface and immerse themselves in the hidden narratives embedded in each work. Among her major sources of inspiration is her work titled “Expression,” for which she received the Grand Distinction for originality, aesthetic quality, and technical merit at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, awarded by the Cercle des artistes peintres et sculpteurs du Québec (CAPSQ) in 2007. The work was featured in group exhibitions at the Salon de Tournai in Belgium. Building on this piece, Yasmine’s art continues to evolve through an ongoing exploration of visual language, intimacy, and presence. Her aesthetic, both poetic and captivating, invites viewers into a calm and contemplative dialogue.
