Large-format and XXL paintings: how to choose, scale and hang big art

A large-format painting is the single fastest way to transform a room. An XXL piece sets the mood, anchors the furniture and turns a blank wall into a focal point. This guide explains when to go big, how to get the scale right, how to hang it — and how to find the right large painting, whether from a catalogue or made to measure.

Why a large-format painting changes everything

One large piece almost always beats a cluster of small ones. A big canvas reads as intentional and calm, fills a wall without clutter, and gives the eye a single, confident focal point. In a living room, entrance or open space, large-format art is what makes an interior feel finished and designed.

What counts as large, XL and XXL?

As a rough guide: large starts around 100 cm (40 in) on the longest side, XL around 120–150 cm, and XXL beyond 150 cm — often well over 2 metres for a true statement wall. The right number depends on the wall, not a label: that's why getting the scale right matters more than the category name.

How to get the scale right

A reliable rule: a piece (or grouping) should fill about two-thirds to three-quarters of the wall or the furniture it sits above. Over a sofa, aim for a work roughly two-thirds of the sofa's width. Leave breathing room around it, and hang the centre near eye level (about 145–150 cm from the floor).

Finding the right large piece in the catalogue

Many large-format originals are ready to ship from the L'Original catalogue — each listed with exact dimensions, technique and artist, so you can match a piece to your wall with confidence. Browsing by size and style is the quickest path when you already know the space you need to fill.

Custom and mural: when the catalogue isn't enough

Sometimes the wall demands an exact size, a specific palette, or a true mural. That's where a commission comes in: with PickArt you tell us what you love, and we match you with an artist to create a large-format piece or mural made for your space. It's how most clients get an XXL work that fits perfectly.

Frequently asked questions

What size painting should I hang above a sofa?

Aim for a piece about two-thirds the width of the sofa, hung with its centre around eye level and roughly 15–25 cm above the backrest. For a wide sofa, a single XL/XXL canvas usually looks better than several small frames.

Are large-format paintings more expensive?

Larger works use more materials and time, so they generally cost more — but the impact per dollar is high, since one large original replaces several smaller pieces and defines the whole room. Catalogue pieces and commissions cover a wide range of budgets.

Can I order a painting in an exact custom size?

Yes. If no catalogue piece fits your wall, PickArt lets you commission a large-format painting or mural in the exact size, palette and style you want, created by one of our represented artists.
