The cream is not blank space. It is the cover that history keeps trying to pull over the people underneath. I let the paint sit thick so the figures have to fight their way back through it—striped bodies, reaching arms, dark heads that refuse to disappear. They are kin I never met and memories that will not stay buried. The white does not erase them. It only makes their return louder.
