A French Bug

When Rubrique-à-brac’s rebellious spirit takes over and dictates its whims on my canvas. With this new original painting, I wanted to pay homage to Marcel Gotlib’s offbeat universe by showcasing his famous ladybug. I searched high and low in the dark corners of the comic panels to find it. With this ultra-saturated scarlet red background, I create a unique contrast with that corn-yellow hue. I wanted to pit the little creature against color, since it has so often known only black and white. The inclusion of speech bubbles and its witty lines adds that touch of absurd humor and typographic street art that I love so much. I really enjoyed working in this medium format and, above all, bringing this amusing character from my earliest childhood reading to life. It’s a clear nod to the rebellious spirit of 1970s Franco-Belgian comics.
