Deposition (2018)

Deposition | Déposition From Echoes of Violence | Échos de violence Diptych 24x36 in each Content note: sexual violence. Kahina Vox created this work using the bedsheet on which rape too place. The sheet is part of its meaning: when survivors are asked, “Where is the proof?”, the work answers, Here—in the material itself. The small white centre represents the bruised, shrunken core self she carried after sexual assault. Across the series, black represents violence and abuse. Here, the black lines represent the barriers survivors face in court: scrutiny, cross-examination, and pressure to be perfect to be believed, a revictimisation and a violence in itself. The gold lines also express the resilience it takes to keep moving through each barrier, even while feeling trapped by the violence endured.
