Endurance

“Endurance” (18x24 inches) of the series Echoes of Violence This piece is the pressures women endure every day. The lines in the middle are like the psychological scars left behind by violence. The burgundy is like the color of dried blood, as though deep psychological or emotional or physical scars left behind by violence. It’s about survival under pressure, functioning while exhausted, surviving confinement and holding ourselves and everything around us together despite pressure. The black can also represent the system in which we are that are keeping us contained and confined in abuse. The gold elements represent resilience, dignity and survival despite it all. Also, the center can represent steps to take to escape, or different layers of the self. The small gold on each “scar” represents her resilience peaking through despite the darkness that surrounds her. You can also see racism in this peice, another form of violence lived by women everyday.
