My painting playfully reimagines the myth of the coyote’s endless, futile chases. My charming Road Runner is definitely much too fast for him. The tight framing I use and the angle of the dynamic lines accentuate the sense of movement and urgency inherent in the Looney Tunes universe. I thus attempt to capture the split second of an imminent collision while preserving the lightheartedness and absurd humor of the original cartoon. The painting technique I use highlights the textural quality, which is particularly evident in the treatment of the ochre ground and the sky, whose textured appearance evokes the rock and dust of American canyons. My deliberately imperfect and accentuated outlines break away from the industrial smoothness of animated productions to emphasize the authenticity of the painterly gesture. The bold, saturated blocks of color, combined with textural effects, give my original scene a modern, striking, and highly decorative graphic presence.
