How to get my artworks into a gallery in 2026
In 30 seconds
Getting your artworks into a recognized gallery requires 5 steps: identify the 5-10 galleries that truly match your positioning (not all of them), build a complete artist portfolio (CV, statement, 15-20 high-res artworks, studio video), approach with a personalized email (no mass mailing), propose a short meeting (15-20 mins max), and negotiate standard terms (40-50% commission, 6-12 months duration, geographic exclusivity). Typical response rate on a well-prepared portfolio: 15-25%. Out of 8 galleries approached, 1-2 positive responses.
Why the majority of applications fail
I have received over 800 artist applications at loriginal in 5 years. 90% are discarded in 90 seconds. Not out of contempt: due to immediate visible incompatibility. Three recurring patterns:
- Applying to all galleries in the city without personalization.
- Artworks that do not match the gallery's positioning at all.
- Poorly prepared portfolio (low-resolution photos, vague statement, disorganized CV).
Of the remaining 10%, we might retain 5% after evaluation. In the end: 0.5% of applications lead to representation.
Step 1, identify the 5-10 matching galleries
Not all galleries. Selection criteria:
- The gallery already represents artists at your level (emerging, intermediate, established).
- The style of the represented artworks dialogues with yours (without being identical).
- The prices charged match your price range.
- The gallery has a solid reputation (not a 'commercial gallery' that takes any paying artist).
- Geography compatible with your production location.
Indicative list in Montreal for emerging-intermediate artists: loriginal, Galerie Patel Brown, Bradley Ertaskiran, Galerie Hugues Charbonneau, Battat Contemporary, Pierre-François Ouellette. Study each site, their recent exhibitions, their represented artists. You apply to the 5-10 that TRULY match, not the 50 that exist.
Step 2, build a complete artist portfolio
Minimum portfolio:
- Structured artistic CV: 1-2 pages, exhibitions in descending order by year, awards, education.
- Artist statement: 250-400 words, 5-paragraph structure.
- 15-20 high-resolution artworks: gallery-quality photos.
- Artist portrait photo ideally in the studio, natural light.
- 1-2 minute studio video: optional but rewarding, shows your process.
- Artwork list: title, year, dimensions, medium, reference price, status (available/sold).
Everything bundled into a 12-20 page PDF portfolio OR a dedicated well-structured portfolio website.
Step 3, approach with a personalized email
The standard email that works:
Subject: Representation Application - [Your Name] Hello [Gallerist's Name], I am [your name], a painter based in [city]. I have been following your work since the [specific exhibition title] exhibition and I find that [specific aspect that moves you]. My current work explores [thematic angle in 1 sentence]. I have attached my artist portfolio. I would love to meet you for 15-20 minutes to present my approach in person. Are you available in the next 3 weeks? Sincerely, [Your Name] [Phone] [Website]
Visible personalization. Short. No pressure.
Step 4, propose a short meeting
15-20 minutes maximum for a first meeting. No more. The gallerist evaluates you, you present the essentials, you decide on the next steps. Bring physically:
- High-quality physical portfolio (impresses more than a phone).
- 1-2 small format artworks if possible (direct touch).
- Professional business card.
Behavior: enthusiastic but not desperate, structured in your presentation, listening to questions.
Step 5, negotiate standard conditions
If a positive response, standard conditions in Quebec 2026:
- Gallery commission: 40-50% of the sale price before taxes (North American standard).
- Representation duration: 6-12 months renewable, often with geographic exclusivity.
- Insurance of artworks: generally borne by the gallery during representation.
- Promotion: gallery ensures visibility (openings, fairs, press).
- Prices aligned with your website and other galleries (total consistency).
See RAAV standard contracts for reference.
The 4 mistakes that close doors
- Mistake 1, unpersonalized mass application. Identical email to 30 galleries = 0% response rate.
- Mistake 2, poorly prepared portfolio. Low-resolution photos, disorganized CV. Discredits you immediately.
- Mistake 3, incompatible artwork level. Applying to a gallery that sells at $8,000/artwork while you sell for $800. Misaligned.
- Mistake 4, pressure or desperation. 'Help me, I need to sell' kills any professional relationship.

FAQ
How many galleries should I approach at the same time?
5-10 maximum, no more. 5 personalized applications are better than 50 generic ones.
Should I accept the first gallery that says yes?
Not necessarily. Check the conditions, the seriousness, the already represented artists.
How long before following up?
3-4 weeks after the initial send. Beyond that, a polite follow-up once, then move on.
