Vodniciar Vladimir Artwork «Portrait of the Little Dog» — 40x50cm oil on canvas 2021

I painted this work in 2021 in oil on canvas. I received a commission from a person who wished me to create a portrait of their dog based on a photograph. I chose a small format because this type of dog is not large in size, and I created the portrait on canvas, while my wife made a watercolor version on paper. I aimed to create a portrait that would be a faithful representation of the animal’s physical appearance, while also offering an artistic interpretation of its personality and character. I chose to maintain the same color range throughout the background, from turquoise tones to cobalt azure blue, extending into darker greyish shades in the shadow areas, so that the warm color of the dog’s fur would stand out harmoniously against a cool and neutral background. Therefore, in order to create balance and depth within this small format, I intentionally created a contrast between the warm colors of the fur and the cool colors of the background. I focused on rendering the specific colors, proportions, and expression of this dog, but in a personal manner that reflects my own artistic style. In the lighter areas, I applied the paint more densely in order to emphasize the structure and volume, while in the shadows I used transparent glazing layers to achieve greater depth. It was necessary to carefully decide how to represent the violet blanket on which the dog is resting, so that it would not appear as a separate element, but would contribute to the unity of the entire composition through its chromatic relationship with the background. Therefore, I focused on painting the relationship between the main subject of the portrait and the environment in which I placed it, using related colors and tones so that all elements of the painting would belong to the same visual atmosphere. I paid particular attention to the characteristic details — the shape and color of the eyes, the wrinkles of the skin on the head, the expression of the face, and that specific gaze which conveys the animal’s personality. I wanted this pet portrait to go beyond a simple photographic reproduction, leaving the mark of my own hand and transforming it into a work of art — something timeless and more valuable than a simple image. Through the creation of this painting, I sought to express visually my own way of seeing and feeling, offering a painterly interpretation through the use of color, texture, and contrast, in order to communicate something beyond what a photograph can reveal. The client collected the Pet Portrait Painting from our workshop in LaSalle and was very satisfied with the final result.
