Artwork Description

This Landscape of tulips is inspired by a real tulip field and was painted by me in oil on canvas in the summer of 2020 in LaSalle Montréal Canada. What first attracted me to this subject was the vast scale of the field and its extraordinary multitude of colors. I wanted to create the sensation that the viewer is not looking at the field from a distance, but is entering into it, among the flowers. For this reason, I brought the tulips into the foreground and paid particular attention to each flower — its form, orientation, the opening of its petals, and its chromatic relationship with the surrounding flowers. The reds, pinks, yellows, oranges, and whites follow and intersect one another in a continuous chromatic rhythm, while the greens of the leaves and stems create a visual connection between all these colors. I did not seek a uniform repetition of the flowers, but rather their natural diversity. I tried to give each tulip its own position, volume, and chromatic intensity. In this way, the field becomes a multitude of individual forms which, when viewed together, transform into a single, vast and vibrant landscape. The sky also plays an important role— I wanted to bring it visually closer to the field of tulips. The clouds participate in the construction of space and perspective across the middle of the format. Their forms, dimensions, and succession create directions that lead the eye toward the central area of the horizon. Thus, perspective is constructed not only through the gradual reduction of the flowers into the distance, but also through the rhythm and orientation of the clouds, which enhance the sense of depth and openness. The contrast between the density of the flowers in the foreground and the vastness of the sky creates an essential tension within the work: Multiplicity and infinity, proximity and distance, color and space. The field occupies almost the entire visual horizon, while the sky opens the composition toward a much wider space. This relationship between earth and sky is one of the fundamental characteristics I sought to express through the painting.Yet, for me, the tulips also carry a deeply personal meaning: From 2012 until 2020, I had not returned to Moldova, and throughout those years I deeply missed my homeland. While painting this field of tulips in LaSalle, my thoughts returned to childhood and, in particular, to my first primary-school Teacher, from my native village in southern Moldova. I still remember an 8 March during my first years of school, when, as a young child, I walked to her home to give her a bouquet of tulips as a gift for International Women’s Day. She was an exceptional Teacher whom I have never forgotten. I still remember her lessons, and especially the moment when she placed a pen in my hand and taught me how to write.  This memory returned to me while I was painting the tulips. Then, in the autumn of 2020, I had the opportunity to return to Moldova for a three-week visit. I went to my native village and, to my great surprise, I met my first teacher again. After so many years, our meeting was a particularly meaningful and unexpected surprise for both of us. Thus, this painting unexpectedly came to unite landscape, color, memory, and personal reality.  This Artwork carries its own vibration within my heart — a vast field of tulips merging at the horizon with a profound sky. Particularly suited to a spacious living room, where its expansive horizon, vibrant floral colors, and luminous sky can become a strong visual focal point.
