Two aged hands, painted with meticulous detail, with translucent skin, protruding veins, and deep wrinkles etched into each phalanx, grasp a long strand of wavy hair. The gesture is firm, almost possessive, as if these hands were trying to hold on to what threatens to slip through their fingers. Against a light, neutral background, long painted streaks flow from the forearms down toward the bottom of the canvas, as if time itself were trickling out of the body. This work draws on an intimate memory: my grandmother treasured, in a box, the braids she had cut from her sisters’ hair when they were teenagers. The lock of hair thus becomes much more than a pictorial motif; it is a relic, a bodily fragment preserved across the decades, a tangible trace of a sibling bond and a bygone era. By placing these aged hands on this younger hair, the canvas brings together two temporalities: that of the body wearing away and that of the frozen, intact memory. The drips evoke the gradual fading of memory, while the hair itself endures, the sole material remnant that time cannot alter.
