How many artworks to present at an opening: the 2026 formula

6 min readBy Dorian Verdier

In 30 seconds

Empirical formula: number of artworks equals surface area (sq ft) divided by 30 to 50 depending on formats. For a 600 sq ft gallery: 12 to 20 works optimal. Three adjusting factors: average work size, thematic angle, commercial goal. Beyond 25-30 works for a solo show, attention is diluted.

Why this question matters more than it seems

I've seen artists make 40 works for a 500 sq ft room: 'flea market' effect, low sales. I've seen 6 works for a 1000 sq ft room: 'empty show' effect, lack of depth.

The right artworks/surface ratio conditions professional perception.

The basic formula

Number of artworks = surface area (sq ft) / 30 to 50. Adapt according to three factors.

Factor 1, average artwork size

Small (under 16x20 in): divide by 25-30. Medium (20x30 to 36x48 in): divide by 30-40. Large (over 48x60 in): divide by 40-60. Example: 800 sq ft gallery with medium works: 800/35 = ~23 works.

Factor 2 and 3, angle and objective

  • Factor 2, thematic angle: Concentrated demo = divide by 50-60. Diversified catalog = divide by 25-35.
  • Factor 3, commercial objective: Sales-oriented commercial gallery = high end of range. Idea-oriented museum/ARC = low end of range.

Recommendations by venue type

  • Commercial gallery (400-800 sq ft): 12 to 20 works
  • Loft / larger space (1000-2000 sq ft): 20 to 35 works
  • Artist-run center (500-1000 sq ft): 10 to 20 works
  • Art fair booth (100-200 sq ft): 6 to 15 works

At loriginal, our Saint-Paul and Saint-Denis galleries typically host 15-25 works per solo exhibition.

Structuring pivot artworks

Plan 2 to 4 'pivot' artworks: Visually more striking, serve as landmarks, strategically placed (entrance, center, exit), and best represent your thematic angle.

The 3 mistakes regarding numbers

  • Mistake 1, wanting to show everything. 'I have 40 recent works, I'll show them all.' Select without hesitation.
  • Mistake 2, underestimating hanging time. 30 works require 8-10 hours of hanging minimum.
  • Mistake 3, not keeping works in reserve. 2-3 reserve works allow replacing a sold work on D-day.

FAQ

Mix of formats or uniformity?

Mix recommended to pace the visitor path.

Add works during the exhibition?

Possible but destabilizing. Prefer planning from the start with a reserve.

Should all works be sold?

No. Typical goal: 30-50% sales in 4 weeks. Above 70%, prices are probably too low.
