How to do a proper artwork hanging: 8 rules in 2026

7 min readBy Dorian Verdier

In 30 seconds

A proper hanging follows 8 technical rules: central axis at 1.50m from the floor (museum standard), spacing proportional to format (30-50 cm), alignment by axis or base, perfect leveling with a bubble level, 30-degree lighting to avoid glare, labels to the right at 1.40m, organization by thematic groups, and minimum 60 cm margin at corners. These rules are non-negotiable for a professional look.

Why hanging matters so much

I saw an exhibition transformed from amateur to professional simply by rehanging everything in 4 hours the day before the opening. The works were the same, the effect completely different. Hanging is a language.

It says 'this is important', 'this is secondary', 'look at these two together'. A bad hanging makes strong artworks invisible.

Rule 1, central axis height at 1.50m

International museum standard. The central axis of each artwork (middle height) at 1.50m from the floor, median human gaze height. Exception: works over 200 cm in height can go up to 1.60m-1.70m.

Rule 2, spacing proportional to format

Rule of thumb: minimum spacing equal to a third of the width of the largest adjacent work. 60 cm works: 20 cm spacing. 120 cm works: 40 cm. 200 cm works: 70 cm.

Rule 3, alignment by axis or base

Either central axis alignment (works centered on 1.50m, recommended for varied formats), or base alignment (bottoms aligned, recommended for similar formats). Do not mix the two logics.

Rule 4, perfect leveling

No artwork visibly crooked. A 2 mm difference over 1 meter is noticeable. Mandatory equipment: bubble level, measuring tape, pencil, drill, suitable screws.

Rule 5, 30-degree lighting

For unvarnished canvas works: directional lighting at 30 degrees from the vertical. Avoids glare. For works under glass/varnished: sharper angle (15-20 degrees) or strong diffusion.

Temperature 3,000-3,500 K (gallery warm white) or 4,000-4,500 K (contemporary neutral white).

Rules 6 to 8

  • Rule 6, labels to the right at 1.40m: Western standard. Label 5-15 cm from the frame.
  • Rule 7, organization by thematic groups: Three logics (chronological, thematic, formal). Choose one main logic and stick to it.
  • Rule 8, minimum 60 cm margin at corners: No artwork within 60 cm of a room corner, door, or window. Corners visually absorb works.

The 5 mistakes that sink a hanging

  • Mistake 1, hanging too high. Works at 1.70m force visitors to look up.
  • Mistake 2, spacing too tightly. Amateur 'family wall' effect.
  • Mistake 3, ignoring direct lighting. Glare turns the artwork into a mirror surface.
  • Mistake 4, inconsistent alignment. Some works at 1.50m, others at 1.40m: messy.
  • Mistake 5, forgetting levels. A single crooked work contaminates perception.

FAQ

Should I pay a professional art handler?

For heavy works (15+ kg) or complex exhibitions, recommended. $50-$80/hour.
