How an artist can exhibit in a museum in 2026

9 min readBy Dorian Verdier

In 30 seconds

Exhibiting in a museum does not happen via spontaneous application. The typical path takes 10 to 20 years and goes through 4 stages: recognized gallery representation, artist-run center exhibitions, integration into public collections, and being scouted by a curator. Quebec museums rarely open to emerging artists directly.

Why a museum isn't just another application

Many emerging artists think they just need to send a portfolio to a museum's chief curator. Museums select their exhibitions on 2 to 5-year cycles in advance, based on systematic observation of the art world. You don't get a museum's attention by writing to them. You get it by being visible in the places they observe.

The 4 steps of the typical museum pathway

Step 1, recognized gallery representation (years 0-3)

It all starts there. A recognized gallery becomes your first institutional marker. Curators monitor these galleries.

Step 2, artist-run center exhibitions (years 2-6)

Artist-run centers (CAA) are the waiting rooms for museums. Aim for a CAA exhibition every 18-24 months for 4-6 years.

Step 3, progressive integration into public collections (years 4-10)

Art Bank, municipal purchases, 1% program. Having 3-5 works in public collections positions you.

Step 4, scouting by a curator (years 6-15)

A curator spots your work. You start with a group show. If successful, solo show 3-5 years later.

The 3 access paths in 2026

  • Path 1, solo exhibition (rare, selected): Reserved for artists with 15-25 year careers.
  • Path 2, thematic group exhibition: Main access route. Presence in art press around themes museums are preparing.
  • Path 3, inclusion in permanent collections via donation or purchase: A collector can donate a work to a museum.

Quebec and Canadian museums to know

MNBAQ (Quebec City), MAC (Montreal), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, McCord Stewart Museum, Musée d'art de Joliette, Musée d'art contemporain des Laurentides, Musée régional de Rimouski, National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), AGO (Toronto).

The classic mistake of spontaneous applications

  • I saw an artist write to the MAC chief curator three times in two years with magnificent portfolios. No response.
  • Not out of contempt: out of logistical impossibility. A major museum receives hundreds of applications a year. Curators have no time to process them.
  • It's NOT that you should give up. It's accepting that the access path runs through the ecosystem rather than direct application.

FAQ

How many years until my first museum exhibition?

On average 8 to 15 years of documented professional career.

Do you need an MFA to exhibit in a museum?

Not mandatory but useful. University degrees in visual arts facilitate access to grants and institutional legitimacy.

Do museums buy exhibited works?

Sometimes. Some buy a work tied to the exhibition for their collection. Sales percentage remains low (typically 5-15%).
