Vodniciar Alina Artwork «Portrait of the Little Dog» — 40x50cm colored pencils on drawing paper 2021

My husband received a commission in 2021 to create a Dog Portrait. In addition to the Oil on Canvas Artwork that he painted, we also chose to create a version in the form of a Colored Pencil Drawing on special drawing paper. I created this Dog Portrait Drawing from the same photograph and focused on expressing the character of this little companion, capturing all the unique features and details that make him special. We used exactly the same format and dimensions for both Artworks. I also chose to develop the entire Drawing using a softer range of values and colors. I created the background with lighter tones and, through a colored pencil hatching technique, I maintained the same color harmony, but with a more subtle and less intense depth. I carefully drew the proportions, the personality of this dog, the color of his eyes, the texture of his fur, as well as all the characteristic elements that make this Pet Portrait unique. I intentionally left the four corners of the paper free, allowing the hatching to gradually emerge from the pure white surface of the paper toward the Drawing itself, without covering the entire format with tonal values. This approach clearly emphasizes the authentic character of a Drawing created entirely by hand. I created this Dog Portrait by paying special attention to the expression of the eyes, because the gaze is the main element through which the personality and sensitivity of the animal are conveyed. Through colored pencils, I aimed to represent not only the external appearance of the dog, but also that feeling of calmness, gentleness, and closeness that characterizes a beloved companion animal. I built each detail gradually through delicate layers of colors and fine hatching, in order to achieve volume, depth, and the most natural possible sensation of the fur texture. I chose to preserve the visible texture of the paper as well as the subtle marks of the pencil, because these elements contribute greatly to the artistic expression and authenticity of a handmade Drawing. Through this Artwork, I wanted to create a sensitive artistic representation in which the technique of Colored Pencil Drawing highlights the unique character of this little companion. I specialize in creating all types of Portraits, and this kind of Animal Portrait , or "Pet Portrait" — falls into the first category due to the simplicity of the pieces, which I draw using a particularly expressive approach.
