I drew this Portrait in the spring of 2023, and this girl with the book is the daughter of the same person who had previously commissioned the portrait of the little girl wearing the red dress. In the original photograph, the model was holding a game controller, and the client asked me to make a change and draw a book in her hands instead. This girl is represented in full figure, with a more complex format composition, since it was necessary to compose and draw the entire figure. I drew this artwork by emphasizing the naturalness of the child’s position, the calm expression of the face, and the delicate gesture of the hands holding the book, replacing the object in her hands from the photograph with a book in order to create a more peaceful atmosphere, more suitable for the portrait. It was necessary to carefully render the proportions of the body, the texture of the clothing and the folds of the fabric in order to preserve the realism and balance of the entire composition. In fact, the initial photograph is only a reference that guides me in creating a hand-drawn work of Art, and this aspect brings it value. I sought to highlight the child’s personality through the details of the face, the direct gaze, and the relaxed posture of the body. Through this Drawing, I created a complete Portrait, in which the elements of the figure, the clothing and the represented object contribute together to expressing the innocence and naturalness of childhood, paying attention to the expression of the eyes, the position of the head, the shape of the mouth, and all the distinctive characteristics of this model. An important aspect is the ability accumulated over many years to improvise and transform a photograph into a hand-drawn Artwork while preserving the closest possible resemblance to the person being drawn.
