Velvet King

Artist Marie-Eve Hurteau developed a deep fascination with neurodivergence following diagnoses within her family. Through her work, she chooses to highlight the positive side of being different—a different way of perceiving, thinking, and interpreting the world. Velvet King represents non-linear thinking, a way of processing thoughts where ideas do not necessarily follow a straight or predictable path. To express this, the artist layers textures, marks, colours, and various visual elements. They intersect, overlap, and sometimes seem to move in opposite directions, yet ultimately come together as a cohesive whole. These different layers reflect the richness of a neurodivergent mind—a mind where multiple ideas can coexist, connect in unexpected ways, and lead to a different, yet equally meaningful, understanding of the world.
