Gray Wolf

The morning mist does not erase the forest—it sets it aside. It hides the spruce trees behind a veil, like witnesses who will not be questioned today. And in this in-between space, between the visible and what awaits discovery, there he is. He poses no threat. He makes no plea. He stares with that calm, unblinking gaze unique to animals that have nothing to prove. His eyes are yellow like amber warmed by the sun, the only warm spots in a world of gray and cold green. Everything else—the fur, the mist, the trees—is tuned to the same muted note of the northern dawn. We’d like to take a step back. Or step forward. We don’t know yet. That’s exactly what a wolf is: the hesitation provoked by something older than ourselves. Inspiration It was the misty morning scene in the boreal forest that set the mood for this painting.
