Razor bills

Here, too, the rock yields nothing, yet it still sustains life, clinging to its crevices like a promise kept for generations. Nine little penguins cling to this edge of the world, the last cliff before the species turns back south. They cry out, fall silent, brood, and withdraw into themselves, each occupying its own rung on this spiral of stone rising toward a single sentinel at the very top, its beak open toward a sky that promises nothing in particular. Below, a young, round body is already asleep, indifferent to the commotion, as if the survival of the species depended solely on its sleep. The golden streak running through the rock is neither gold nor fire, but merely accumulated, patient, mineral time that has witnessed more generations of birds than any human eye will ever see.
