A Good Man

This work depicts the impact of a parent’s suicide on their children through three figures that embody different manifestations of trauma and grief. The parent’s head suspended in midair, a smile streaked with blue tears, a burnt-out cigarette, the central character’s scream, the slumped figure, and the black stains gradually engulfing the composition all embody the absence, the shock, the silence, and the dark thoughts left in the wake of suicide. By contrasting the figure of the parent with the two children—one screaming and the other silent—the work captures the different ways in which a parent’s suicide can continue to affect their children.
