This work depicts the prejudices and expectations imposed on same-sex couples through two figures shown in profile in a gesture of affection, confronted by symbols of constraint. The eye and nail makeup, the handcuffs on their wrists, and the closeness of their bodies graphically embody the expression of identity, judgments based on appearances, and the limits imposed by external norms. By contrasting the tenderness of the gesture between the two figures with the idea of confinement suggested by the handcuffs, the work captures the paradox of a relationship reduced to imposed categories, even as the individual transcends the boxes into which others seek to place them.
