About something being free: something about a Tiger is a mixed media work on paper by the artist Gaëlle Étémé. The work is striking for the irregularity of its forms, a characteristic found throughout the artist's work, which rejects perfect lines because, for her, no territory possesses perfect geometry. Every territory is always a playground, shaped by journeys, writings, movements, and habitats. This is precisely what the support represents for this artist. Here, paper, as she often likes to emphasize, is a territory, a parchment of the mind where the passage from non-self to form is experienced, the search for freedom through questioning the very notion of space. About something being free is this initial discovery of space as tiger-space. Floating animal, promise and journey. The variegated lines of a territorial calligraphy in India ink and oil paint bring forth at the center of the piece what resembles a tiger cub, while from edge to edge of the piece, worked in acrylic and a garish yellow spray paint, uncertain animal forms seem to want to give birth, like expressions of cries.
