Artist production and revenue goals: SMART method 2026

8 min readBy Dorian Verdier

In 30 seconds

Define your annual goals with SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound. 3-5 goals maximum, balance production/revenue/career. Complementary OKR method with 3 key results per objective. Review quarterly. Without structured goals: drift and chronic improvisation.

Why structured goals change everything

Two artists at equivalent level in early 2024: one with 4 SMART goals tracked quarterly, the other going by feel. End of 2024: +38% revenue, 2 galleries approached, 12 works produced vs stable revenue, no gallery, 7 scattered works. Not more talent — just goal structure.

SMART method adapted to visual arts

  • Specific: "sell 25 works between $800-2,500" rather than "sell more"
  • Measurable: "3 mentions in authority media" rather than "become more visible"
  • Achievable: if 12 sales in 2025, aim for 16-20 in 2026, not 60
  • Realistic: 15 works × $2,000 = $30,000 ceiling — don't aim for $100,000 without changing structure
  • Time-bound: "before December 31, 2026"

Production goals — examples

  • "Produce 18 canvases 24×36 in from the Effacement series before October 30, 2026"
  • "Complete 12 pieces for the November solo show"

Revenue goals — examples

  • "Reach $45,000 in gross art income in 2026"
  • "Sell 20 works between $1,500 and $4,000 by December 2026"

Career goals — examples

  • "Obtain 1 intermediate CALQ grant"
  • "2 articles in Vie des Arts or Le Devoir"
  • "Solo show in 1 gallery outside Montreal"
  • Recommended balance: 3-5 goals spread across all 3 categories

The OKR method

  • 1 qualitative Objective + 3 quantitative Key Results per OKR
  • Maximum 2-3 OKRs per year
  • Example: Objective "Become recognized in the Montreal B2B market" + 3 measurable KRs

The 4-step process

  • Step 1: previous year review (week 1 of January)
  • Step 2: define 3-5 SMART goals (week 2)
  • Step 3: action plan with 5-10 actions per goal (week 3)
  • Step 4: quarterly review (Jan, Apr, Jul, Oct 15)

The 4 goal mistakes

  • Mistake 1: too many goals — 10 goals = 0 achieved, maximum 5
  • Mistake 2: vague goals — "increase visibility" can't be measured
  • Mistake 3: too ambitious — tripling revenue in 12 months leads to discouragement
  • Mistake 4: skipping quarterly review — setting in January then forgetting = no effect

FAQ

Should you share your goals publicly?

Not required. But sharing with a mentor or peer artist increases commitment (accountability).

What if you don't reach an annual goal?

Honest analysis: goal too ambitious? Poor execution? Circumstances? Adjust for the following year.

How many years to see results from this method?

Visible effects in 12 months. Major cumulative effects in 3-5 years.
