Sylvain Martin is an abstract expressionist painter based in Vieux-Longueuil. Originally from Paris, he lived in Poland and the United States before settling in Quebec in 2004. He holds an MBA and worked for fifteen years in management and marketing before changing course. Music first illuminated his life: a pianist and keyboardist since childhood, he composes, and in 2022 he released, under the name Voyager, a debut electronic album titled Paris Montréal. THE APPROACH

Tel une œuvre, touche par touche, le monde évolue et nous transforme.

Painting arrived later, as a bolt of lightning. In 2013, an amateur painter friend, Jean Benoit Aubé, gave him a small box containing a mini 8 x 10 in canvas, a brush, and three colors. He opened the box only seven years later, just as he was about to discard it. In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, he discovered painting, and the connection was immediate. Self-taught, he left management and became an abstract expressionist painter in 2022, inspired by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Georges Mathieu. His work explores connection—to others and to the environment. Every relationship is the result of micro-interactions and shared moments. Like an artwork, each detail shapes it over time, touching and transforming those who engage with it. Inspired by action painting, he applies paint intuitively. In the background, the soft blur of spray paint contrasts with the crispness of liquid or high-viscosity paint, hurled from his hands or his knives. Whatever the medium, there is a fleeting instant of suspension during which the paint flies before landing unpredictably on the canvas—like a considered gesture from which, a moment later, a shared emotion emerges. At times, within this controlled chance, a silhouette appears: a face, a sphere, foliage. That is the moment he seeks to capture, when emotion takes shape. Concerned about the climate, he occasionally incorporates repurposed objects as supports. He likes to step outside the frame of the canvas, explore new textures, highlight their uniqueness, and raise awareness about overconsumption. Empathetic and hopeful, each work is an invitation to connect with oneself, with others, and with the environment.
