Mel Roy, a self-taught artist who has been working full-time since March 2023, has been passionate about art since she was very young. Her artistic journey began with drawing, but it wasn’t until her early twenties that she discovered her true passion for painting. She first explored acrylics with brushes on canvas before falling in love with the depth and texture offered by oil painting. Recently, she has returned to acrylics after discovering a high-quality paint that allows her to fully express her creativity. Mel Roy’s artistic style focuses primarily on portraits, whether they depict well-known figures or strangers. Her works stand out for their use of a black background, a subject rendered in shades of black and white, and a contrasting element in a vivid color—such as a cigar in her “Cigar” collection or glasses in her “Perspective” collection. As a figurative artist, Mel Roy occasionally explores landscapes to step outside her comfort zone and challenge her artistic limits. Mel Roy’s artistic influences are deeply rooted in the observation of light and shadow. She finds inspiration in meticulous detail and the way each object can be rendered on canvas. She admires all artists for their ability to express their art in a unique and expressive way. Throughout her career, Mel Roy has been recognized for her artistic talent. In March 2024, she received a “Distinction” from Gallery 4% for her exceptional work, and in October 2024, she was honored with a “Special Mention” from the jury of the Les Enchères de l’Espoir auction. Through her work, Mel Roy seeks to convey emotions and evoke memories in her viewers. Each piece tells a unique story and allows everyone to find personal meaning based on their own experiences and culture.
