Creator of Emotions
A self-taught artist, Mel Roy has worked full-time since March 2023. Passionate about art since childhood, she began with drawing and, in her early twenties, discovered her true affinity for painting. She first explored acrylic on canvas before falling in love with the depth and texture of oil. Recently, she returned to acrylic after discovering a high-quality paint that allows her to fully express her creativity. Roy’s work focuses primarily on portraiture, depicting both well-known figures and strangers. Her pieces are distinguished by a black background, a subject rendered in gradations of black and white, and a vivid contrasting accent—such as a cigar in her “Cigar” collection or glasses in her “Perspective” collection. As a figurative artist, she occasionally explores landscapes to step outside her comfort zone and push her limits. Her influences are rooted in close observation of light and shadow. She finds inspiration in meticulous detail and in how each object can be translated onto canvas. She admires all artists for their ability to express their art in a unique and expressive way. Throughout her career, Roy has been recognized for her talent. In March 2024, she received a “Distinction” from Gallery 4% for her exceptional work, and in October 2024, she was honored with a “Special Mention” from the jury of the Les Enchères de l’Espoir auction. Through her work, Roy seeks to convey emotion and evoke memory. Each piece tells a unique story and allows viewers to find personal meaning shaped by their own experiences and culture. Her art is an emotional journey that invites reflection, feeling, and connection with a universal and timeless form of expression.
