Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Daniel Lévesque’s artistic journey traces a vibrant path that takes him from the neighborhoods of Verdun and LaSalle to the bucolic expanses of Saint-Constant and Saint-Ours, all the way to the wild shores of Pointe à la Frégate in the Gaspé Peninsula. His earliest memories are marked by an irresistible attraction to pencil and paper: by the age of four, drawing was an extension of himself, and at just eight years old, he was painting his first oil canvases. Even as a teenager, Lévesque was already charting his own course and organized his first exhibition at the age of fifteen. Artistic talent runs in the family: his mother and uncle provided fertile ground for his creativity, encouraging a spirit of experimentation and spontaneous expression. The artist’s training combined private lessons in high school, courses in calligraphy and pedagogy, training in digital tools such as Adobe software, and, above all, personal exploration. As an adult, Lévesque’s creativity found numerous practical outlets. He built his career through the hands-on disciplines of hand lettering, signage, and screen printing, before turning to the precision craftsmanship of cabinetmaking. These diverse activities have not only refined his sense of composition and color but have also honed an ingenuity that continues to fuel his painting practice today. Lévesque’s paintings are now guided by emotion and the fleeting phenomena that capture his attention. For him, painting is more than a challenge: it is a path to personal balance, a journey that brings him inner peace. His creative process begins with a spark: the allure of a fascinating subject, often rooted in human experience or nature. This is followed by meticulous research, gathering photos and fragments that inform his compositions; from there, he translates his vision onto the canvas, methodically working through a series of steps he has set for himself, always in search of those ecstatic bursts of vibrant colors and textures that buyers and his peers consider the hallmark of his work. Lévesque often refuses to name specific influences, preferring to speak of dialogues—with his artist friends, and between each new series of works and the previous one—always seeking to experiment, always pushing the boundaries. His famous “humans with animal heads” series is a perfect example: an original thematic exploration that blends exuberance, structure, and creative play. Throughout his career, Daniel Lévesque has exhibited in numerous venues, from his first group exhibitions in 1968 to more recent ones, such as the “1855” group exhibition at Usine 106U, the Galerie d’Art au Fil des Ans, and the annual Clorid’Art symposium. A proud member of the Gaspésie Visual Artists’ Association and Culture Gaspésie, his works have found collectors not only in Canada but also in the United States and Europe. For the artist, recognition is not measured by awards, but by the reaction of viewers, captivated by the intensity of his colors and the palpable energy of his brushstrokes. Outside the studio, Lévesque draws inspiration from his own work: as a cabinetmaker and sculptor, his hands are always in motion. Although he does not devote himself to painting full-time, his craftsmanship and sense of structure deeply permeate the vibrant worlds that unfold on his canvases.
