Juana M. Fernández-Hamer is an Afro-Cubana artist born in Cuba in 1966. She left Cuba with her nuclear family and lived in Madrid, Miami, New York, and finally settled in northern New Jersey. After high school, she attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she studied painting and ran track. There, she met her husband, and they have been married for 30 years. Although she initially studied art, she pursued a career as an educator and taught for over 20 years before deciding to return to her original passion for painting. There is a song by the singer, Ismael Rivera ,Las Caras Lindas, that communicates everything about the beautiful faces of my people. This portrait captures the velvety feel and sumptuous skin and the penetrating gaze of a beautiful black woman with a story to tell. Unapologetic!
