THE APPROACH

Gabriel Labonté-Pelletier is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montreal whose pictorial practice explores the fragility of the image through the experience of the present and contemporary affects. Through a process of assemblage, he brings into tension fragments of popular culture, digital imagery, artistic references, and elements of his own intimacy. Currently a student in art history at UQAM, he is continually developing this network of references and has presented his work in various contexts, including Art Cible, the exhibition Echoes by Maison France-Montréal as part of Nuit blanche, and The Holy Art Gallery in London. Gabriel Labonté-Pelletier questions the fragility of the image through the experience of the present, lived experiences, and contemporary affects. His pictorial practice unfolds as an assemblage where elements of popular culture, digital imagery, artistic references, and intimacy confront one another. Inspired by Surrealism, the unconscious becomes a space of image collision rather than a site of simple associations. Images meet there, deform, and produce shifts in meaning. These frictions reveal the tensions of a personal experience and a collective imagination, of fantasies and mediated realities. His pictorial works, surfaces of unstable projection, offer a pause for the gaze, allowing it to slow down and remain attentive. Amid the ceaseless flow and rapid obsolescence of contemporary images, they offer a suspension—of the very images that compose our world—bearing witness to its precariousness, saturation, and persistence.
