“Modern Art for Nostalgic Souls”

Painter · Gatineau , Canada
As a child, Caroline Chrétien dreamed of having a painting studio like her grandmother’s, who taught her the basics of oil painting in the old general store of a small Quebec village. Passionate about people and their stories, she initially pursued journalism, yet never abandoned her artistic side — a pursuit to which she now dedicates herself fully. Her visual universe is steeped in nostalgia. Influenced by the retro songs her father played on guitar, the vintage objects that filled her grandmother’s home, and afternoons spent recording favorite songs on cassette, Caroline Chrétien has developed a distinctly vintage artistic language. She combines collage, spray paint, and acrylics, finishing each piece with a layer of oil that wraps her work in warmth and familiarity. Through her paintings, she tells stories inspired by everyday life — of ordinary people, their passions, struggles, and memories. In her studio, resonating to a decidedly non-modern soundtrack, Caroline Chrétien currently explores themes of belonging and perseverance, always with a touch of absurdity and humor. “My art doesn’t take itself too seriously. I want to make people smile. Because a Walkman is fun… but a Walkman-fish is even better.”
