Born in Schefferville, Quebec, Bruno Tomei now lives and works in Granby. A self-taught artist, he also benefited from three years of mentorship with a recognized artist and gallery owner. His career includes several significant milestones. He has exhibited his sculptures at two Quebec museums, the Musée Acadien de Bonaventure and the Musée Amérindien de Saint-Hilaire. He was represented for six years by Galerie Guy Bourget in Old Montreal. Invited to the Mamu Symposium in Sept-Îles, he presented his work alongside artists from Canada’s First Nations. Bruno Tomei is a self-taught artist and an archaeologist of wood, guided by intuition and a deep spiritual search. His geographic and emotional roots lie in the Canadian Far North, which has nurtured his closeness to nature, his attention to living beings, and his sensitivity to landscape. In his artistic inquiry, he explores the relationship between human beings, the cycles of nature, and a form of spirituality embodied in matter. His practice is part of a personal transformation inspired by his encounter with the worldview of the First Nations of North America. Informed by their teachings, his work also emerges as a gesture of gratitude toward this philosophy of life. His practice unfolds across several series—including Animouks, Pesca, and Polaire—each exploring, through a distinct visual language, the bonds between animals, nature, and the memory of place. Whether working in sculpture, relief, or painting on natural materials, he favors found or reclaimed elements in an approach that respects the environment and natural cycles. He has been creating driftwood animal totems since the age of 25, which he calls the Animouks. His process begins with daily walks along the seashore, where collecting becomes a time for observation. In this mindful approach, the work is not manufactured; it is revealed. The artist accompanies the forms already present in the driftwood, bringing them out with touches of acrylic paint and, at times, additions of metal. Animals hold a central place in his work. They are at once symbols, guides, and bearers of memory. Each species embodies a particular quality, energy, or wisdom and becomes a witness to the fragile relationship between human beings and the living world. Through his work, Bruno Tomei seeks to rekindle each person’s deep desires and dreams. He invites viewers to reconnect with animals as carriers of a spiritual dimension and of the land’s memory. His art is an invitation to draw on ancient wisdoms, to restore a sensitive bond with nature, and to recognize animals as guides in our relationship with the living world.
