In August 1926, several elephants escaped from the Sells-Floto Circus. Among them was Charlie Ed, who disappeared into the Kootenay wilderness. For one brief moonlit passage, Charlie belonged to no circus, no road, and no human hand. Beneath the Sturgeon Moon, he wandered the forest, an unlikely traveler moving through a landscape that would remember him long after the wilderness gave him back.
