This painting reflects on a historical famine in China, experienced by my grandparents’ generation. As a child, I learned that people survived by eating insects and tree bark—an idea that stayed with me. Lemurs, spiders, and stick insects appear alongside bark-like forms, blurring the line between human and animal. They suggest a state of survival driven by instinct, where dignity and identity begin to collapse. The Chinese character “殍” anchors the work in this history.
