This Still Life with Watermelon and a bouquet of yellow tulips combined with blue irises was painted by me in 2014, with the desire to discover other variations of still life compositions with watermelon, so as not to repeat the ones I had already painted before. In fact, my father-in-law had large watermelon plantations in Moldova for many years, and I often used to visit my future wife Alina, where we would frequently enjoy eating the biggest and most beautiful watermelons from those fields. I take great pleasure in painting this delicious fruit and in rendering through impasto oil colors the structure of its sweet, red, and juicy flesh, in such a way that the viewer can almost feel its flavor when looking at the painting. Speaking specifically about this still life, I painted it in my own style, through palette knife strokes, the same style in which I created other still lifes with apples, mushrooms, pumpkins, and watermelons — all expressing vibration through the dynamic marks of the palette knife. In this Artwork, I pursued not only the representation of an arrangement of everyday objects, but the transformation of a personal memory into a visual and sensory experience. “Still Life with Watermelon” is a still life built upon the contrast between emotional memory and the expressive power of color. The watermelon becomes a symbol of summer, abundance, the connection with the earth, and my personal memories of Moldova. The composition is organized through a dialogue between powerful forms and colors. The left side of the painting is dominated by the energy of the flowers, where the intense yellow of the tulips and the small fruits on the table create light and optimism. The blue-violet tones of the irises introduce depth and balance, while the combination of these complementary colors creates a chromatic vibration characteristic of oil painting. I was not searching for a quiet harmony, but rather for a living one, where every patch of color participates in the movement of the entire surface. The impasto-rendered watermelon is the emotional center of the painting. The strong red of the flesh is built through layers of color and palette knife touches that preserve the material quality of the paint. Through the impasto technique, I wanted the surface of the painting to transmit a sensation of freshness and juiciness, so that the viewer could almost feel the texture of the fruit. The thickness of the oil paint creates relief and transforms every knife stroke into a trace of the artistic gesture. My working style is based on the freedom of the painted stroke and on the expressive quality of the material I work with, while the palette knife becomes an extension of my pictorial gesture. Through these vibrations of color, I construct the form without rigidly outlining it, allowing light to emerge from the encounter between different shades. Each surface — the green skin of the watermelon, the red interior, the flowers, the wooden table, and the atmospheric background — is treated through a language of pure color and texture. The background in shades of violet, gray, and blue creates a deep, almost meditative atmosphere, allowing the luminous elements to stand out. This contrast between the cool and warm areas gives the painting tension and balance, while the light appears to be generated directly by the colors placed upon the canvas. In this Artwork, I sought to preserve the balance between the observation of nature and the freedom of personal expression. The objects are real, but their interpretation belongs to my own pictorial universe. The watermelon, the flowers, and the simple objects on the table become carriers of a mood — a memory transformed into color. Still Life with Watermelon represents for me an encounter between past and present, between personal experience and the universal language of painting. Through color, material, and gesture, I wanted to preserve not only the image of a fruit, but also the sensation of a summer, a moment of joy, and a connection with nature. An important element of the composition is the wine bottle with the inscription “Torino” and the glass placed in the foreground. This discreet “Torino” label adds a realistic detail, while at the same time creating a connection with the world of memories and with objects that carry traces of time. These objects introduce a human dimension into the Still Life, suggesting the invisible presence of the person who observes, of the one preparing to participate in this moment of tranquility and pleasure. They transform the composition from a simple representation of objects into a scene of life, where the fruit, flowers, and wine come together to create the image of a table prepared for joy and communion. The dark bottle contrasts with the luminosity of the watermelon and the chromatic explosion of the flowers, serving the role of visually anchoring the composition. Its vertical form introduces stability and balance between the lower part of the table and the bouquet of flowers in the upper area. The wine glass in the foreground is treated with delicacy, through transparency and subtle reflections, becoming a point of transition between the solid surface of the table and the chromatic richness of the fruits. The golden liquid inside the glass captures the light and brings a note of refinement and warmth. Through this small detail, I wanted to suggest not only an object, but a state of being — a moment of pause, contemplation, and appreciation of the simple things that bring beauty into life. Together, the bottle and the glass create an atmosphere of an intimate feast, where the gifts of nature offered by fruits and flowers meet the human element. They complete the story of the watermelon, transforming this still life into a sensory experience: color, taste, fragrance, and memory. Through the presence of the watermelon, the flowers, the wine bottle, and the glass, this Artwork creates an atmosphere of hospitality and refinement, making it suitable for elegant spaces such as restaurants, bars, wine houses, or interiors where one wishes to bring a warm, sensory, and authentic presence.
