In 2002, I received a private commission as a gift for a couple, depicting them embraced during the night on the seashore. I chose to paint a couple sitting on the shore of the sea, surrounded by palm trees, contemplating the distant horizon. The Artwork is built around the idea of intimacy: the couple, seated on the shore and viewed from behind, appears as a single emotional presence, quietly contemplating the landscape together. Despite their small scale within the vast natural environment, the two figures become the central human element of the composition, giving depth and emotional significance to the majestic presence of nature. The composition in format has a cinematic structure: the palm trees in the foreground create a natural frame, the water provides depth, and the mountain range closes the horizon. The large moon, positioned between the palm leaves, becomes the main source of light and guides the viewer’s gaze toward the center of the landscape. The two distant birds introduce a subtle element of movement into a scene otherwise dominated by silence and tranquility. An important aspect of the artwork is the deliberate choice of an almost monochromatic palette, composed of black, white, and shades of grey. This limitation of color removes the decorative character that a tropical landscape might otherwise have and transforms it into a more contemplative image. The moonlight reflected on the water and the dark silhouettes of the palm trees and the lovers create a powerful contrast between darkness, light, and space. The format 76×152cm, with its very horizontal proportion, is particularly suitable for this composition. The elongated format enhances the panoramic feeling and allows the viewer’s eye to travel through the landscape — from the palm trees on the left, across the surface of the water, toward the couple on the right and the mountains in the background. The command had this particularity that the format to be long, with the intention of placing the Artwork above a sofa or a bed, as a painted panorama created specifically for an intimate interior space. The theme of love and its destination for a bedroom naturally complement and reinforce each other.
