2021•Oil on Canvas
Dimensions : 89 x 61cm | 35 x 24 in
During the years 2020–2021, I saw several times in LaSalle Montreal, a beautiful young woman whose face was largely covered by a veil. I was impressed by her beauty and especially by the contrast between her hidden face and the intensity of her gaze. Her appearance impressed me deeply and became a source of inspiration for this Portrait, and I searched, through painting, for a way to express what I had seen. I chose to depict only what could be seen beneath the veil, in a close-up composition, focusing attention on the only visible part of her face: her Eyes. I intentionally concealed most of her face in darkness, allowing only her gaze to become the principal bearer of identity — the Eyes are the psychological center of this work. Through this choice, her gaze remained the main element of the portrait, while the veil both defines and accentuates the presence of the face. The veil conceals the face, yet this concealment makes the gaze even more present. The viewer is invited to search in the eyes for what can no longer be read in the rest of the face. I painted the veil in oil using glazes and subtle tonal transitions, with variations of light and transparency. In certain areas, I intentionally preserved the texture of the canvas, contributing to the sense of materiality and the rendering of the white fabric. The dark background intensifies the contrast between the black space, the whiteness of the veil, and the warm tones of the skin. By reducing the face to what can be seen, I transformed the gaze of this young woman into a substitute for the complete Portrait. What remains hidden does not diminish her presence, rather, it makes it more concentrated and more mysterious — this is a Portrait painted from what can be seen and what remains concealed. For me, this young woman has remained an Enigma, and I hope that one day I may meet her again.
