Lunar Flu

Lunar Flu is one of the very first paintings of my life. The day before, I had painted my first one. That evening, I had the flu. I was sad, too. I had just quit drinking, and at the time, staying home made me feel like I was dying of boredom. It felt as though my life had come to a standstill. Yet something unexpected happened. As I painted this sick little moon, I realized I no longer needed alcohol or nights out to feel alive. Even with the flu, there was nowhere else I wanted to be but in front of my canvas. Without realizing it, I had just found the thing that would change my life. Lunar Flu is, fortunately, not contagious... but it is never separated from its companion, the sun, portrayed in another of my paintings entitled “Maniaco-Expressive.” These two paintings belong together.
