This painting depicts falling in love and the grief of losing it. The two subjects symbolize the two emotional states through both composition and material. The first subject is painted using vibrant watercolours and soft swirling brushstrokes as a means to create a dreamy and unaware atmosphere, similar to when people first fall in love. The second subject is painted with harsh, straight brush strokes and desaturated colours as a means to create a bleak, cold atmosphere, centring a painfully aware subject.
