Petrification

This work is part of an ongoing body of paintings exploring addiction, trauma, and death. These forces have shaped my life and continue to define the conditions of many others. From 2010 to 2014 I lived through cycles of drug and sex addiction, culminating in a violent home invasion and years of severe PTSD. These experiences led me to examine how addiction is intertwined with enforced gender norms and toxic relationship dynamics that are sustained and normalized by societal pressure. The composition interrupts a pornographic image and mutates the figures into unfamiliar entities to break the erotic gaze. The male figure becomes a stone statue encased in agate, still and beautiful yet lifeless, his head transformed into a massive seed pod, potential locked away until consciousness awakens. Animals layered over his surface act as spirits trapped within. The female figure is blindfolded by her own indifference, headphones sealing her in. She is both unwilling participant and silent witness, embodying the passivity expected in transactional intimacy. The work draws on the myth of Medusa, recasting her as the invisible industry that freezes desire into commodity and turns connection into paralysis. Here, nature becomes the agent of reclamation, slowly enveloping the outcomes of a masculinity shaped by domination rather than care.
