Commodity

This painting is part of a series exploring the impact of pornography and sex addiction, both personal and cultural, and the way these forces shape perceptions of intimacy, identity, and power. It grew from my own history of addiction and the long process of untangling its effects. Here, the figure is positioned in a confrontational pose, referencing the language of erotic display while simultaneously disrupting it. The body is pixelated at its most explicit point, denying the viewer the satisfaction of voyeurism and exposing the mechanisms of consumption. The figure’s head is transformed into a porous, organic mass, a hybrid between coral, fungus, and wound, suggesting vulnerability, mutation, and the erasure of individuality. The saturated pastel palette, dominated by pinks, purples, and oranges, pushes the scene into an unsettling space between sweetness and threat. Light radiates in a circular halo from the upper right, mimicking the religious iconography of sainthood, yet here it sanctifies an image that is fractured, commodified, and stripped of personal agency. The title _Enveloped_ speaks to the way desire, shame, and commodification can enclose a person until the boundary between self and the forces acting upon them begins to dissolve. This work challenges the viewer to question not only the objectification of the body but also the systems that normalize and perpetuate it, asking where intimacy ends and exploitation begins. It is both an act of reclamation and an unflinching look at the costs of living inside a culture where intimacy is so often mediated through the lens of consumption.
