Quietness

Quietness depicts a figure not fully transcendent, just displaced. This piece emerged as I recognized a pattern in my own spiritual seeking: the attachment had shifted from physical to spiritual, but this wasn't wholeness. It was non-acceptance of embodiment disguised as elevation. The figure's three-dimensional head element, constructed from organic bio-architectural forms, reads as an unfamiliar structure up close but generates presence from a distance. Soft pinks, yellows, and lavenders surround a form suspended above deep blue water: beautiful, serene, yet fundamentally imbalanced. This work confronts a spiritual bypass I've witnessed in myself and others: the temptation to float above difficulty rather than move through it. The shadow remains because the body remains, whether we acknowledge it or not. Meditation becomes another escape rather than integration when it serves rejection of the physical. Within the trilogy exploring states of consciousness, this middle piece holds necessary tension. It's not a condemnation of spiritual practice but an honest reckoning with its shadow side (the quietness that is actually avoidance, the peace that is actually dissociation). The modular construction developed at ILLAPSE residency in Barcelona allows this monumental work to travel internationally. Canvas rather than panels, velcro-attached sculptural elements: practical innovation born from necessity that maintains the physical presence these pieces demand. True quietness, the work suggests, isn't found in floating above turbulence but in accepting both ground and groundlessness.
