At the Threshold of Light

I had a solo exhibition coming up and was seeking to express this light that was increasingly taking up residence within me, like a white column, sometimes tinged with pink, above my head, penetrating deep into my inner earth. I chose to work with a very limited palette: different tinted whites in my mixtures, grays, greens, earth tones, and more liquid medium from the outset than I would normally use. I gave myself permission to let everything I was feeling flow onto the canvas, freely and without expectations. Very quickly, the canvas began to speak, almost with a sense of urgency, without a sketch, without a predetermined composition, without reflection. The sky sang, the mountains appeared, faded yet fully present, structured like a link between sky and earth. The earth opened at the center, alive and organic, allowing a column of light to emerge that seemed to rise from the earth, even though it had originally come from the sky. I was fascinated and could not, with my mind, understand exactly where this light was emanating from. The painting was becoming a revelation. Then I understood that I simply had to continue my quest, to unite light and matter.
