The Princess(working title)

‘The Princess”(working title) is a biomorphic surreal painting exploring themes of sanctuary, escape, and protection. In the center foreground, a sleeping princess with long red hair rests under the watchful guardianship of a unicorn, surrounded by floating red and purple magical bubbles. The figures are enveloped by dense fauna and tall grass that consume the majority of the composition, leaving only a small sliver of sky at the very top. This compressed framing creates a secluded, lush environment where the subjects are entirely hidden in nature. The work draws heavy inspiration from the flattened, patterned landscape compositions of Gustav Klimt, as well as medieval fantasy and folklore. Biomorphic, swooping brushstrokes guide the viewer’s eye through the piece, injecting an organic energy into both the dense vegetation and the princesses' flowing hair. Technically, the paint is built up sequentially from thin to thick layers to achieve a flattened appearance. Utilizing a glazing medium, the color palette shifts dynamically from muted base layers of green and turquoise to vibrant, acidic overlays of orange, red, and bright green. Symbolically, the painting processes personal experiences of confinement. The princess represents a deeply felt desire to escape a restrictive environment to find true freedom, while her unicorn guard embodies a protective shield of safety and calm. Together, the figures and the environment work in tandem to offer the viewer an overwhelming sense of comfort, peace, and ultimate refuge.
