Safe Slumber

“Safe Slumber” depicts a figure sleeping atop Pluto in a surreal iteration of outer space. In the background, a blazing sun looms above as distant planets drift further away. The upper edge of the world appears to rip apart, unleashing a chaotic rift of black tar, star creatures, and approaching asteroids that close in on the sleeping form. The piece is deeply rooted in Kessem's personal experience with depression and the emotional consequences of letting it fester. It serves as a visual metaphor for the trap of "bed rotting"—the comforting yet destructive cycle of avoiding life's worries by retreating into isolation. Part of an ongoing series featuring the artist with green skin, the unnatural complexion intentionally gives her an alien-like appearance, symbolizing her profound sense of alienation from society. To visually heighten this psychological landscape, Kessem utilized a vibrant, neon green underpainting. By building translucent layers over this luminous base, the entire composition achieves an eerie, otherworldly glow.
