Mural by Octavio Ruest

This work brings together a street-art vocabulary and a urban approach. Its value does not come from applying decoration to architecture: the mural gains meaning through its scale, its surface and the way it is encountered in a real place.

Active since 2003 · Neighborhood: Ville-Marie / Plateau-Mont-Royal Octavio Rüest paints portraits that are—literally—in motion. Born in Montpellier in 1987 and based in Montreal since 2003, this self-taught, neurodivergent artist has invented a form of mobile muralism: he travels through neighborhoods by bicycle, pulling a trailer fitted with a life-sized canvas; he stops in parks, sets up a rudimentary studio—consisting of a pot of black paint and a brush—and paints passersby who agree to sit for a portrait. "The work lies at the intersection of relational and contextual art practices, through which the artist creates spaces for dialogue within the public realm." His arrival in Montreal was not that of an art student seeking a stimulating scene; rather, it was the arrival of an immigrant in a precarious situation, forced for several years to work illegally on construction sites and in factories while his immigration application slowly made its way through the system. These years profoundly shaped his relationship with the city, social inequalities, and the question of who has the right to occupy public space. This experience informs his entire current practice. Lacking initial formal training, he honed his technique independently before beginning studies in print media at Concordia University in 2020—a move that expanded his artistic vocabulary to include printmaking, artist's books, and sculpture. His mural practice is supported by the City of Montreal’s Mural Art Program, the Muralité program, and the organization MU. In 2021, he created *Îlotiers d'un instant* in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood; in 2024, he presented the solo exhibition *Façadisme* at the Maison de la culture Marie-Uguay and co-created the mural *Tracés* during a residency at the Agrégat center. His project *Déambulations*—bicycle rides through Ville-Marie and the Plateau where he stops to paint local residents—is at once a performance, a work of public art, and a political act: a reminder that neighborhoods belong to those who inhabit them, and that art can take root in unexpected places—without institutions or pre-designated walls.

Octavio Ruest, whose practice is connected with Montreal, develops a visual world that can be followed from one wall to another. Captions and archives connected to this body of work document several mural interventions. These points of reference place the image within a practice rather than treating it as an isolated visual.
